Bow care

Basic care for wooden bows, so yours lasts for many years.

Best practices

The essentials in 7 points

01

Made for its owner

Every Indiana Bows bow is built specifically for its owner. Made-to-measure bows are designed to be drawn to a specific length and never beyond it. We recommend not letting other people shoot your bow, to avoid overdraw (a draw longer than the one the bow was designed for).

02

Always nock the arrow properly

Always check that the arrow is well seated on the string.

03

Never dry fire

Never draw and release the string without an arrow. This is called a “dry fire” and can permanently damage or even break your bow, causing injury.

04

String it with a bow stringer

How you string the bow matters. The safest and recommended way is to use a proper bow stringer. There are other methods, but they take practice and strength and are hard to explain in text: unless you are familiar with them, use the stringer.

05

Unstring after use

Your bow should be unstrung right after use; never leave it strung when you are not shooting. Wooden bows do not behave like fiberglass bows, and even on fiberglass-laminated bows it is recommended to remove the string, since it tends to stretch under excess tension for many hours in a row. If the string gets longer, twist it until it reaches the brace height stated on the bow.

06

Storage and transport

Wood and bamboo bows should be kept where temperature and humidity are relatively stable. They, and fiberglass-laminated bows, should avoid direct sunlight for very long periods, which can affect the tiller over time or cause delamination. When transporting, protect the bow from crushing and drops. Never let a wooden bow fall while strung.
